Water distribution networks

  • Within urban areas, drinking water is distributed through pipe networks. Every building or facility is connected to the public network operated by water utilities

  • Water loss is directly related to operating pressure levels of each network

  • Most urban networks operate at constant high pressure conditions in order to ensure drinking water provision when demand peaks

  • Nevertheless, the fact is that besides this short “water peaks”, pressure levels are overestimated compared to actual demand

  • Besides pressure, water networks suffer from multiple stress factors such as: corrosion, earthquakes, inadecuate water ussage, metarial fatigue, etc.

  • This stress is constant in time and very difficult to prevent and detect
